Songkran festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April. The date os festival used to be set by astrological calcualtion, but now it's fixed.
Songkran falls in the hottest time of the year in Thailand, at the end of dry season. The time of Songkran used to calcualted following move of the sun into the Aries zodiac, and also in other many South East Asia countries, such as Cambodia and Laos, celebrate this day.

This is the time for Thais to pay homage to Buddha images, clean their houses, and sprinkle water on their elders in a show of respect. Anyone who ventures out on the streets is likely to get a thorough dousing of water, all in good fun, but also quite welcome at the peak of the hot season.
